The Roland Mathias Prize was established in 2005, under the auspices of the Brecknock Society and Museum Friends, to commemorate the life and work of the poet and literary critic, Roland Mathias.
Mathias lived in Brecon for nearly 40 years and played a major role in establishing Welsh writing in English as a distinctive literary genre.
The Prize, which is awarded annually as part of the Wales Book of the Year competition, is for poetry from Wales in the English language. In 2018, the winner, Robert Minhinnick, for Diary of the Last Man (Carcanet), was also the winner of the overall Wales Book of the Year. As with previous winners, he attended an event hosted by the Brecknock Society and Museum Friends where he introduced and read poems from his winning book.
2019 will be the last Roland Mathias prize awarded, so do join us for this historic occasion where there will be food, wine, and beautiful poetry being read by the winner of this year’s Roland Mathias Prize.
